The weather was perfect for running last Sunday and there was an excellent atmosphere at the popular Ripon 10 mile event. Ten Bedale and Aiskew athletes were taking part in the field of just over 450. The race is a mixture of minor roads and cross country with some steep climbs along the way, so not one for fast times. Paul and Nicola Simpson are running the Liverpool Marathon in 7 days and were using this race in their preparation for that event, as well as the Catterick parkrun the day before. They ran together and were the first Bedale runners home in 1 hour 23 minutes and 118th position. Two new members of the club were running this event for the first time with Henry Anderson 168th in 1-27.50, and Tony Clark 197th in 1-31.10. Two of the older established members, who always have close competition, had top half finishes with Raymond Lightle recording 1-29.13 for 176th, and Paul Bainbridge 1-31.07 for 198th. Raymond had run the Catterick Parkrun the day before in a fantastic time of 22.35 and 1st place in the M65 group.
Phil Johnston is a very regular club night attender, but this was a rare race outing for him, and he enjoyed taking on the testing course to finish 233rd in 1-33.57. Lucy Atkinson was the second club lady home in a time of 1-39.09 and 289th overall, followed by Anna Welch in 345th in 1-45.28. Becky Morris did really well to take part having just returned from a week in the USA. Her body clock was telling her that this was not the time of day for a run, however she finished strongly in 379th and a time of 1-50.02.
On the same day the Leeds half marathon attracted over 6000 competitors with Bedale’s Alex McNairn running really well to finish 1184th in a time of 1-47.27. This having run at the Catterick Parkrun the day before with grand daughter Lola in a time of 28.01. Nicky Watkinson had a good run to finish in 25.50, with long term injured Helen Simpson helping out as a volunteer official. Paul McGee ran at the Bradford parkrun where nearly 500 were taking part.
